There are different interpretations of what a Guilty Pleasure is. For me, it is something that makes me happy but I don’t want to admit to people that it does. Not that I care about the backlash, it’s just something that, for multiple reasons, I do not want to admit that it gives me pleasure. For example, a television show I would never admit I liked or watched was Hogan’s Heroes. For most of my life this show was on syndication. When I would get “caught” watching it, I’d say I was just channel surfing.
Desperately Seeking Susan (1985, Orion) Rosanna Arquette and Aidan Quinn fall in love. The plot is sort of confusing and there are parts that didn’t need to be there. For some reason I find myself watching this movie every time I catch it on.
Tarzan, The Ape Man (1981 MGM/United Artist) Mile O’Keefe, Bo Derek, and Richard Harris star in this version of “Tarzan.” It should be called Jane, The Woman Who Fell For Tarzan. I enjoy this movie none the less due to Miles O’Keefe. He’s so pretty. This movie you get to see most of him. Some of his other movies; Waxwork (1988), Campus Man (1987), and all his various Ator movies, could all easily been on this list, but this one, as I said, you get to see a good deal of him, even if he’s not in the first almost hour of the movie.
Tank Girl (1995 United Artist) Lori Petty, Naomi Watts, Ice-T, and Malcolm McDowell. One of the few times Lori Petty’s annoying voice 100% fit the character. This movie is a complete comic book movie. They even do some comic book scenes. If you go into the movie knowing it is based on a comic book, you can enjoy it more.
Weird Science (1988 Universal Pictures) Kelly Le Brock, Anthony Michael Hall, Bill Paxton, and Robert Downey Jr star in this movie. It’s an odd movie. We’ll ignore the older woman kissing teenagers portion of the film. I like this movie for the bar scene. I like to quote it in the voice that AMH gave his character while acting drunk. Very amusing.
Masters Of The Universe (1987 Cannon Group) Dolf Lungren, Frank Langella, Courteney Cox, and Billy Barty (I had to add Billy). If you have seen the video of He-Man singing to the 4 Non Blondes song, What’s Up, you will understand this statement; Dolf made He-Man manly. He was perfect for this part. It is too bad the script was weird. If you ever watched the actual cartoon, you should give it a try. I thought the make-up was pretty good, but I do know people have criticized it.
These are 5 movies that are Guilty Pleasures for me. I’m sure I’ll have more at some point. My next one will be Underrated Rom-Coms, or maybe movies Guaranteed To Make You Cry.
